This image is a double page spread specifically done for The Velocity Anthology, issue #4, which will be published in October 2013.
These characters in this battle are all from a comic project that I am working on, and they have been with me for many years. The image depicts a battle from the history of my story.
The design and layouts were roughed out in Photoshop and I had to do a few concept designs of the tanks and the costumes, as well as updating the anatomy for race depicted in the scene.
Roughs were then transferred to 19"x24" bristol board on which the pencils were completed, and then inked.
The inks were then scanned into Photoshop, where I colored it as a 600dpi file.
My art is very much rooted in solid line art and generally has a comic book quality to it. I am inspired by the great classical comic and fantasy artists like Frazetta, Wrightson, Wood and Otomo and have a huge interest in vintage pulp science-fiction.
Preference is always to create my own, original worlds and characters and I try to create things then are new and unique but somehow still connected to the roots of modern science fantasy.
