Where would you like to be in five years’ time?

A small outsource studio overlooking the beach, working on exciting projects with a handful of friends. It doesn’t have to be near the beach, but since we are dreaming, why not.

Looking back with the benefit of your experience, are there are things you wish you had done differently, in terms of your career?

That's a hard one, I wish I had been more focused with my art and followed through on the ideas I’ve had in the past. I had a real bad habit of starting paintings but never finishing them. I thought that if I could just get 10 illustrations painted I'd be able to send them off and get a job doing book covers. But I'd get distracted and go surfing. I get angry with myself for being so lazy when it comes to doing personal art. After all, that’s the only art which is from no one else’s brain but mine.

If you could give one piece of advice to people looking to break into the industry, what would it be?

Be honest with your abilities and don’t be afraid to throw out bad work from your portfolio. Your weakest images will drag down the good ones. Your time and energy is much better spent creating new art than pimping your old work. It takes time to create a good portfolio, so have patience.
