Intro

Alien Apple Studios is a concept design studio based in England, UK. With a creative team that has a whole heap of knowledge and experience, Alien Apple Studios offers a broad range of creative and design skills including storyboarding, concept design, key moment visualization, product branding and much more.
In this tutorial Stuart Jennett talks through a typical process as he demonstartes how to paint this Dropship concept.

Dropship Concept Painting Tutorial

Stage 1: Line Art

The first stage for me is a rough line sketch, note that at this stage the design elements of the dropship and the characters are pretty well defined already, as all the design elements just fell into place. You may want to concentrate on them seperatly if designs prove difficult to get right first time or are just in need of more attention.

Stage 2: Composition

Keeping the viewer visually stimulated is the job of the artist when creating an image and a few methods are used to help keep the eye moving around the compostion. First off notice how the drawing uses the rule of thirds, this means that the dropship and characters are roughly placed where the vertical and horizontal lines intersect and also the three major elements themselves are different sizes; Dropship (large), Soldier on the left (medium) and the Soldier on the right (small).

Stage 3: Underpaint

The first color pass blocks most of the values the image will need straight out the gate and gives a good indication whether it is working quickly. The major land mass at the bottom of the image helps again to create interest in the composition.
