Making Of 'Shangri-La'

Looking at the image of the Uyuni salt lake, I thought I would try to draw this Shangri-La image.

I did a rough sketch in black and white first, which is usually how I start my process. I think my intention was to show a huge building in a mysterious space, such as Uyuni salt lake (Fig.01).

I felt that the character in the foreground was lacking movement at the stage, so before complete the sketch in black and white I had to fix the composition. I decided to make a new sketch of the character, and rethink the pose (Fig.02).

I began to add color to the image, at the same time I determined the pose of the character. I had decided to put the cherry tree in from the beginning to accentuate the image. I was thinking clouds would add an attractive quality also (Fig.03).

I proceeded to draw in details little by little. I tried to add a sunset out of the way of the main focus, as not to distract the viewer, and avoiding a boring picture (Fig.04).
